III.24: Raiders' End

Jungle, near Haka’torvhak
Nymm 14, 997 YK

Okay, the key roll here—does Esthana catch up with the Blackscales before they reach Haka’torvhak?

Hunt and Track(Asmure): 2D6(2 3) +2 = 7 Partial success.
You follow the creature’s trail
Scout Ahead(Esthana): 2D6(4 2) +1 = 7 Partial success.
You get the drop on whatever lies ahead

Yes. Both rolls are only just enough for the partial success, but they got it.

Let’s see how Anaya’s doing.

Defy Danger(CON)(Anaya): 2D6(6 1) +1 = 8 Partial success.
Tell them the requirements or consequences and ask: Lose the chainmail or take a penalty

Anaya accepts the penalty Sick for a -1 to Con rolls.

It was only a few hours since dawn, but the jungle was already stiflingly hot. Anaya could not know how far the Blackscales had taken them, but they must be more than a hundred miles from Newthrone now, in the deepest part of Q’barra’s jungle. The cleric would have given much for a sea breeze right now, anything to relieve the thick, humid jungle air.

I will let them get a little healing, but not the usual half of their hitpoints per rest because they are not getting to rest properly.

On this morning, however, the lizardfolk had not set out at dawn. Neeate and three others waited restlessly around the campfire, and even the two lizardfolk guarding Anaya and Nyseris seemed distracted.

Anay shifted a little closer to Nyseris. “We are not doomed to die here. The Flame is with us, even now, wherever we go.”

Nyseris shifted only slightly. The ranger was strong, but was still in much pain from their burns. Anaya had not been allowed to heal the ranger or herself, of course. “The Flame is with us,” Nyseris replied weakly.

“There is no darkness that cannot be pierced by the light. The Flame would never let them free their master.”

One of the Blackscales said something in Draconic, and Neeate snapped back a reply. Anaya looked to Nyseris questioningly.

Discern Realities(Nyseris): 2D6(5 3) +1 = 8 Partial success.
What happened here recently?

“The others–s were meant to return,” Nyseris whispered.

Half of the Blackscales had been left behind on the previous morning, so their captors were a far smaller group now than they had been before.

“What were the others doing?” asked Anaya.

“Hunting,” said Nyseris. “Not for food. Pursuers.”

“Then the gul siksta are tracking us—trying to free us?”

Defy Danger(DEX)(Esthana): 2D6(2 4) +3 = 9 Partial success.
Turn their move back on them: the sentry cries out as you kill them.

There was a shriek from somewhere out in the jungle. All the lizardfolk sprung to attention; the two guards looked up to scan the jungle. Neeate said something in Draconic, calling out to the jungle.

Does Neeate stand and fight? Unlikely (Taking the cleric and running would be more prudent and stick to their mission).
Fate d100(6)=Exceptional Yes!
Discern Realities(Anaya): 2D6(1 3) +3 = 7 Partial success.
What is about to happen?

Just one cry; is it Esthana out there? Anaya shifted slightly, peering into the jungle around them.

Defy Danger(DEX)(Esthana): 2D6(6 6) +3 = 15 Success!
Deals d10 (6) + d6 (1) = 7 damage, 2 piercing: another Blackscale scout dies

That’s both scouts down.

The guards might simply kill the prisoners here, or use them as human shields.

Defy Danger(CHA)(Anaya): 2D6(4 4) +1 = 9 Partial success.
Turn their move back on them: The Blackscales are not paying attention to you, but that leaves them free to all face Esthana

Another cry of pain from the jungle, closer this time; a lizardfolk cry, Anaya thought. She did not want to draw the attention of the guards—they might kill her rather than let her be freed—so Anaya kept quiet and still, trying to be ready while still appearing subdued.

Neeate shouted something defiantly, and the remaining six lizardfolk—their guards included—grouped up around their leader, spears at the ready.

Esthana’s sword has the property “infused with Good and Law and is recognised as such by all who see it”, as well as burning with silver flame; and Esthana has killed the entire ambush party that these lizardfolk left waiting for her. I am giving her a chance to just scare them so much that they turn and run.

Defy Danger(CHA)(Esthana): 2D6(6 3) -1 = 8 Partial success.
Worse outcome: only two Blackscales run

The shadows of the clearing flickered, and a moment later Esthana stepped into the clearing. The flames engulfing her sword seemed brighter than ever, its raging light illuminating Esthana’s plate mail. Two of the Blackscales, tough warriors that were over a foot taller than the Templar, threw down their spears and fled east into the jungle immediately; the others took a step back, clustering fearfully around Neeate.

The Templar’s sword was immaculate, but the rest of her was a grim sight. Esthana’s plate was stained with blood, dirty and rended in places. Her gaze momentarily dropped to meet Anaya’s, but then she began advancing again, watching the Blackscales closely.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(3 3) +3 = 9 Partial success.
Deals d10+d6=8 damage, takes d8 (7) +3 = 10 damage, 7 after armour

Neeate pointed and screamed something, and the remaining lizardfolk charged. Esthana parried away the first spear, and cut down the lizardfolk wielding it, but with no shield arm she could not fend away so many attacks; one spear found a joint in her plate and drew blood, and Esthana staggered back.

Cast a Spell(Cure Light Wounds)(Anaya): 2D6(6 5) +3 = 14 Success!
Heals for d8+6=13
Cast a Spell(Cure Light Wounds)(Nyseris): 2D6(2 1) +1 = 4 Failure!
Reveal an unwelcome truth: too weak to act in this fight

Anaya is at 17/17 HP but restrained; Esthana is at 8/26 HP; Nyseris is out of action.

Seeing Red(Esthana): 2D6(1 1) +1+1 = 4 Failure!
Separate them: Neeate is now going to do what they should have done in the first place, and flee with Anaya

“Now Nyseris!” said Anaya, seizing the moment to draw on the Flame. She hoped she would be strong enough to free herself from the bonds now that the guards were busy; the energy of the Flame flowed into her, and she felt her fatigue and pain fade away. She began to struggle with the knots holding her hands.

That caught Neeate’s attention. The Blackscale leader ran over, hurriedly untying the rope from the tree, and hauled Anaya to her feet forcefully. Anaya felt invigorated, however, and resisted the creature towering over her; she stepped around the lizardfolk and shoulder-barged them into the tree, winding them.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(6 3) +3 = 12 Success!
Deals d10 (8) + d6 (5) = 13 damage

21 total damage on this group (and no armour, because of her Signature Weapon’s piercing +2) means 3 out of 4 are dead and the last is nearly done. The Fighter is good at her role.

Defy Danger(STR)(Anaya): 2D6(6 5) +0 = 11 Success!

The next move was Anaya’s alignment at creation: risk yourself to heal another.

Cast a Spell(Cure Light Wounds)(Anaya): 2D6(6 5) +3 = 14 Success!
Heals d8 (6) +6=12 HP

Esthana is at 20/26 HP. Those were some good rolls.

“Esthana!” Seizing the moment, Anaya ran over to the other Templar. Esthana had cut down two more of the lizardfolk, who lay bleeding and scorched on the ground; the one remaining Blackscale was still stabbing at the Templar, more in fear than hope. Anaya reached Esthana and laid a hand on her shoulder, and silver light enveloped them both as the Flame’s healing restored the Templar.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(5 5) +3 = 13 Success!
d10 (2) + d6 (1) = 3 damage, which is enough to kill the last lizardfolk warrior

Refreshed, Esthana made a sudden lunge, dodging past the lizardfolk’s spear and running them through. The silver fire that had surrounded her seemed to flow off of her down the blade and into the creature, burning the Blackscale as they fell to the ground.

Neeate ought to run—only Esthana is in a good position to pursue, and it would not be so hard to outrun someone in ful plate in a jungle—but I did get that exceptional yes earlier.

Neeate was standing by the campfire now, staring at the two Templars defiantly. “What manner of warrior are you, that can kill all my s–soldiers so easily?” the lizardfolk hissed.

“I am a Templar of the Silver Flame,” Esthana replied simply; she held up her sword, still blazing with silver light and untarnished by any sign of blood.

“Your gods are old and tired, human; the power I serve has stood in your flames for thousands of years, yet shows no burns. I fear you not.” Neeate, already wielding a sword, picked up a spiked shield from among the supplies around the campfire; Anaya saw that embossed on the shield was a depiction of a dragon.

Let’s try it again.

Seeing Red(Esthana): 2D6(6 6) +1 = 13 Success!
What here is hidden? Neeate does actually fear that sword, after seeing it cut through all of their soldiers.
What here is useful or valuable to me? You note the position of the campfire, the trees, etc. Plus the camp will contain loot, supplies. Hold 1.

+1 for acting on the information, of course. That is why Esthana needs to use her Seeing Red whenever she can in a fight.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(4 2) +3+1 = 10 Success!
Deal d10 (5) + d6 (1) = 6 damage, piercing 2 armour

Nonetheless, Neeate eyed the sword warily as Esthana advanced, edging away from the Templar. Esthana swung the sword wide to one side, and the lizardfolk parried aggressively with their shield—and then Esthana kicked the lizardfolk in the knee, causing them to stumble into the remains of the fire. Before they could recover, Esthana made the killing stroke, driving her sword up into the lizardfolk’s throat. Neeate stared, shocked, for a moment, before dropping lifeless to the ground.

“Watch the eyes next time, not the blade,” said Esthana, as she sheathed her sword.

Make Camp(party): heal

Loot from the Blackscale party:

  • far from home so 19 rations (one per enemy);
  • for the sorceror, magical: Random wand of locate animals, and d8=7 gives d4 * 100 = 400 gold pieces.
  • for Neeate, divine: the black-dragon embossed shield that Neeate carried, and d6+2+d4 = 8 gives a 500gp item of art.
End of Session(party): Anaya and Esthana met their alignment goals; and they looted a valuable treasure from Neeate so +1 to all for that.

XP:
Anaya: 0 failures, alignment goal; at 11XP.
Esthana: 1 failure, alignment goal; at 10XP.
Nyseris: 1 failure; at 11XP; level up.

Level Up(Nyseris): Cha +1; Random Viper’s Strike: +d4 damage if attacking with two weapons

III.23: Stealing Through Shadows

Newthrone, Q’barra
Nymm 12, 997YK

Mythic GME Chaos Rank: 7
Scene setup: d10=9 (unchanged)

Favoured in House(Vaalyun): Tell them the requirements or consequences and ask: You have to do something for your House to get it

I rolled on the Mythic GME to get ideas for the task to do. 2d100=98,41 = Overthrow Advice. Hmm, that makes me think that the victim here is Taliesin, the royal advisor. Interesting—he was a friendly NPC.

Vaalyun stood before the mirror, waiting patiently for the contact. He was in his new appartments, on the top floor of the new chapterhouse; the rooms were still rather bare, as few luxuries of the Five were available in this frontier nation. Vaalyun had little to admire but the mirror itself as he waited; made from a sheet of pure mithril, its edge was finely moulded to appear as a series of snakes, their serpentine forms forming a circle framing the mirror. The serpentine mirror was a device used by House Phiarlan’s shadows to communicate over great distances; while House Sivis provided similar services for a price, House Phiarlan did not trust its secret communications to another House.

Vaalyun was dressed in his formal house robes, the hydra’s heads embroidered in red on the robe seeming to glow slightly in the lantern light. Appearances were everything in Vaalyun’s line of work, and that applied equally to dealings within the House; while agents of House Phiarlan—the Shadows—were intended to work together to strengthen the House, they also competed for influence, and so one would often have to trade to get what one wanted.

The reflection in the mirror flickered and faded, and was replaced by the image of a clean, well-presented study, yellow painted walls contrasting with blue curtains. Standing at the centre of the image was now another young elf, perhaps sixty hears old, wearing a dark blue doublet and trousers. The room and the clothes seemed like human fashion to Vaalyun, and he supposed that Folas had gone native during his assignment to Sharn.

“Folas, it is good to see you,” said Vaalyun, though his tone was formal.

“Vaalyun,” said Folas, his image standing relaxed in the mirror. “I hope your new venture in Newthrone prospers?”

Discern Realities(Vaalyun): 2D6(6 2) +1 = 9 Partial success.
Who’s really in control here?
Tell them the requirements or consequences and ask: neither of you knows what the other wants; either of you could end up in control, depending who plays their cards better

Too relaxed, thought Vaalyun; he wants something from me. That was hardly unexpected, as Folas would only have responded to Vaalyun’s call for assistance out of curiousity or need.

Vaalyun gave some superficial details about the establishment of the guildhouse here and the situation in the city, and the conversation continued for a few minutes on this harmless topic, before turning to the true business at hand.

“As I described in my request, I require a translation of certain documents that have come into my possession. Do you have a suitable translator available?”

“I do,” said Folas. “What are these documents?”

“They come from an associate of House Tharashk; I am seeking to understand their activities in the city better.” Vaalyun saw no great harm in revealing this much to a fellow Shadow, and it was important that his associate did not use anyone associated with Tharashk to perform the translation. While Vaalyun had no problem lying to other Shadows if the situation called for it, sometimes staying close to the truth was easier.

“I see.” Folas seemed satisfied. “However, you understand that I have my own assignments to see to. If you could offer me assistance in another matter, it would allow me time to arrange this for you.”

Parley(Vaalyun): 2D6(5 3) +2+1 = 11 Success!
You make the trade, on your own terms

“I am in the middle of establishing a new chapterhouse, Folas,” said Vaalyun. “Naturally we will attend to House business as time permits.”

Folas looked away for a moment, probably to mask his frustration. But he turned back and said “Very well, you will get your translation. But I expect my business to be attended to as soon as you are able.”

“What business is that?”

“There is an official in Newthrone who has been causing difficulties for some associates of mine. He is a royal adviser I believe, an elf by the name of Taliesin. I need a local agent to plant some documents in this adviser’s office.”

Investigate(Vaalyun): 2D6(3 1) +2 = 6 Failure!
Influence a powerful institution: some group is trying to destabilize Q’barra by getting this royal adviser dismissed. And Vaalyun does not remember that this is the adviser that gave Anaya information before.

“Very well. That should be possible to arrange.”

By that evening, Vaalyun had his translation, thought it gave him more questions than answers. As he walked to the Keep that evening, refreshed by the cool sea breeze at dusk, Vaalyun was quiet and thoughtful. On other occasions he would talk, of nothing important, to his bodyguards as they escorted him through town; but, having spent his day dissecting evidence stolen from the Tharashk guildhouse, Vaalyun decided to stay quiet. The half-orc was watching him closely, as usual, and he did not want to give anything away.

Give everyone personhood

He had expected the translator to be a half-orc, but it had turned out to be a young halfling—a student from Morgrave University, Vaalyun supposed. Sharn was a such a cosmopolitan city that it should be no surprise that the university there offered such opportunities.

Past conflict, present intrigue

Vaalyun had found the book in the commander’s office in the Tharashk guildhouse; since it had been kept with the expedition maps for Tharashk’s operation, Vaalyun had supposed that it must be important. The translator revealed that the book mostly consisted of a legend from the age of monsters, telling of an invasion of outsiders from the plane of Xoriat that overthrew the ancient goblinoid empire that preceded the Five Nations. Vaalyun had heard this legend told amongst the elves, though it predated House Phiarlan’s move to Khorvaire.

Spout Lore(Vaalyun): 2D6(4 3) +2 = 9 Partial success.
Vague information

But the book’s premise was new to him—that the invasion had been defeated by an Orcish druidic cult that sealed away the Xoriat portals, trapping the aberrations in Khyber. The book was a religious text, in fact. The design on the cover—a circle of arcane runes obscured by a tangle of vines—was the sigil of this cult, the “Gatekeepers”. It was a record of their fight against the outsiders, urging followers to remain vigilant against any weakening of the seals that kept the aberrations from the surface of Eberron.

Vaalyun wanted to deduce more, but:

Investigate(Vaalyun): 2D6(2 2) +2 = 6 Failure!
Front(House Tharashk): Influence a powerful institution: Tharashk has leverage over the army commander in Q’barra

Okay, so the next scene is going to be at the Keep, where Vaalyun is sounding out the rulers of Q’barra to see where they stand on House Tharashk’s operations.

Life of the Party(Vaalyun): 2D6(2 2) +2 = 6 Failure!
You gain useful information.
Event: NPC Action(Lords of Dust): d100 (83) = Assist, d100 (1) = Goals
Front(Lords of Dust): Attack indirectly, through intermediaries

I picked a front to move randomly here, rather than an NPC, as it seemed to make more sense. As I have not worked out anything for the Lords of Dust yet, now is the time to do so; the DungeonWorld front type Demon Princes (impulse: to open the gates of hell) seems most fitting.

Random assassins are... dwarves. Okay. And I have an enemy type in mind as well.

The bodyguard leading the way suddenly stopped, breaking Vaalyun’s train of thought. They had passed the centre of the city and were climbing a street away from the bussle of the marketplace. The orc put a hand to the battleaxe at her waist, and Vaalyun saw hooded figures ahead of them. One was reaching into the sleeve of their dark cloak; Vaalyun dodged to one side instinctively as the figure made a quick motion, and a dagger flashed past, narrowly missing Vaalyun’s neck.

Defy Danger(Dex)(Vaalyu): 2D6(2 4) +1 = 7 Partial success.
Monster move(Spellthief): Use a character’s power against them

Fortunately for Vaalyun, these assassins aren’t from House Tharashk (who do not know that he is their enemy here yet), so his bodyguards actually help. Offer Aid from an Enemy, or Opposition from an Ally. Tharashk is a good name in mercenaries, so let’s give them +1 quality, Warrior, Athletic. But 0 loyalty, they are here for the money only. 2 armour, d6 damage.

Bodyguards, Do Their Thing(Vaalyun): 2D6(6 3) +1 = 10 Success!
d6 (3) +1 = 4 damage

There were three of the assailants ahead—all dwarves, Vaalyun guessed from their stature—and the other two now drew swords while the thrower drew another dagger, angling for another shot. The orc bodyguard already had her battleaxe in hand, and with one forceful upward cut cleaved the chest of the first swordsman open, blood spraying over the cobbles as he collapsed to the ground.

The other bodyguard pushed past Vaalyun to stand beside her companion, and Vaalyun hoped for a moment that they could handle the matter themselves. But then he shook violently as an itching started in the dragonmark down his side. He had never felt the mark like this except when he invoked its power—and then his horror mounted as he realised that his power was at work, as his own shadow began to move, rising from the cobbles of the street to stand beside him, reaching with one hand towards its chest: towards where Vaalyun kept his own dagger.

Defy Danger(Dex)(Vaalyun): 2D6(5 3) +1 = 9 Success!
You dodge away from the attacks, but Separate Them: not close to your bodyguards

The assassin group consists of: two regular thugs (one dead already); a nightseeker (from the DungeonWorld Codex, an assassin throwing poisoned knives); and a spellthief whose move is to use the characters spell-like abilities against themselves.

Volley(Vaalyun): 2D6(4 5) +1 = 10 Success!
Deal 2d4 (1 3)=4 damage, you kill it

Vaalyun danced backwards as the shadow lashed out, sharp-edged darkness slicing past his chest. Vaalyun silently thanked the Host that the street was not busy, and the bodyguards were keeping the other assassins occupied for now; though the shadow was fast, this was not Vaalyun’s first assassination attempt, and he could move quickly enough to evade one opponent. Sensing that it wanted to drive him towards the shadows of of the buildings on one side, where it would be less visible, he ducked under the next blow and rolled down the street, coming up behind it with wand in hand. The shadow flowed effortlessly towards him but, before it could close with him again, a searing blast from the wand struck its head, and the shadow dissolved into black motes that fell to the cobbles.

Bodyguards, Do Their Thing(Vaalyun): 2D6(2 5) +1 = 8 Partial success.
Deals d6+1 = 5 damage, Monster move(Nightseeker): poison

One of the bodyguards is down, put to sleep by some assassin’s poison. But she nearly took out the nightseeker.

Deal damage: d6=2 damage, 1 after armour

Without thinking, Vaalyun looked back across the street to the shadowed front of the buildings where—and saw in the shadows there another cloaked dwarf staring at him. He controlled it—somehow he took my power. Vaalyun raised his wand to fire again, but the figure shifted slightly and the elf felt a stab of pain as a crossbow bolt stuck into his armour just over his heart.

Volley(Vaalyun): 2D6(4 2) +1 = 7 Partial success.
Put yourself in danger, deal 2d4=4 damage

The crossbowman was moving now to join the other dwarves. Vaalyun glanced over and saw that one of his bodyguards was down; she lay at the feet of the dagger-throwing dwarf, who was leaning now against a lamppost with an obviously severe cut to his leg. Vaalyun raised the wand again and fired; the purple bolt of energy cut through the air, catching the thrower in the side and knocking him to the ground.

Bodyguard, Do Your Thing(Vaalyun): 2D6(6 1) +1 = 8 Partial success.
Deals d6=2 damage, takes d6=5 damage (4 after armour)

The other hireling, the half-orc is at 2/6 HP; the remaining thug assassin is at 1/3 HP. The spellthief is doing fine though, and he is the one to follow up on the put-yourself-in-danger from just now. Show signs of an approaching threat

The first shadow I gave only 1 HP, the same as Vaalyun’s power would give it on a partial success. But this time, let’s give it 6 HP, the same as the bodyguard it is taken from would have. In exchange, since this shadow is tougher but slower, Vaalyun has time to back up and take another shot.

Volley(Vaalyun): 2D6(5 5) +1 = 11 Success!
Deals 2d4=5 damage

It’s at 1/6 HP.

Defy Danger(Dex)(Vaalyun): 2D6(5 1) +1 = 7 Partial success.
You dodge, but lose the wand: Use up their resources

Vaalyun felt his dragonmark itch again. As he looked on, a shadow seemed to creep up from under the fallen bodyguard, until the dark form stood seven feet high, towering over Vaalyun. As it drew a shadowy battleaxe from the side of its dark form, Vaalyun fired another shot, arcane light arcing from the wand into the centre of the darkness. The shadow seemed staggered but pressed forward, swinging its axe; Vaalyun barely managed to roll aside in time, and in his haste he dropped the wand, leaving his best weapon lying in the street.

Bodyguard, Do Your Thing(Vaalyun): 2D6(5 5) +1 = 11 Success!
Deals d6=4 damage.

That’s enough to finish the remaining thug and the spellthief.

Vaalyun glanced down at the wand, now lying between the cobbles, the orc warrior’s shadow looming over it. Grabbing for it was too dangerous, so he drew his own dagger, backing away as the apparition advanced. He was about to make a desperate lunge when the shadow, on the point of making another swing with its axe, suddenly seemed to come apart and faded away into the twilight. Vaalyun looked around and saw his other bodyguard, the half-orc, had felled the last two assassins. The shadow must have lost form the moment its controller was killed.

The street was mostly deserted; the few locals must have fled into their houses, so there were only a few passers-by standing off at a safe distance from the fight. Vaalyun ignored them, quickly retrieving his wand and slipping it back under his jacket. He had got away with hardly any injuries, despite the frantic battle: just one small puncture in his jacket marked where the crossbow bolt had tried to reach his heart. Fortunately the tailored leather jerkin that he wore underneath had stopped it from inflicting anything more than a minor cut.

Spout Lore(Vaalyun): 2D6(1 3) +2 = 6 Failure!
Reveal an unwelcome truth

The half-orc was leaning over her companion now, so Vaalyun went to join her. The orc was lying on the ground unconcious, but there was only a small cut to neck just above her armour: no blood or other cuts were apparent. Yet she did not move when the half-orc shook her.

“Poison,” said Vaalyun. “These were not regular street thugs; that one, at least”—pointing to the one that he had blasted with his wand—“had more than greed and a sword. Poisoned knives are a common enough mode of assassination in the Five Nations.” That one had thrown the first dagger, straight for Vaalyun, making the target clear enough.

The half-orc shook her head. “Borgakh would have been insulted to be felled by such a coward’s weapon.”

“We avenged her.” Vaalyn gestured towards the crumpled body of the assassin; the front of his jerkin was scorched from the blast of energy. “I will be at the Keep for the next three hours, attending the dinner there; take the time to get your friend back to the barracks. I’ll speak to the watch commander at the Keep and there should be no trouble for us.”

Discern Realities(Vaalyun): 2D6(4 1) +1 = 6 Failure!
Front(Lords of Dust): Turn an Organisation: The Lords of Dust have another agent in Newthrone, working to turn the government in favour of giving Tharashk a clear run at the jungle. Reveal an unwelcome truth

Vaalyun moved to the crossbowman, the dwarf that had somehow gained control over his mark. The assassin lay dead, blood still pooling where he had been run through by the half-orc’s sword. There was nothing to mark him out as being possessed of any unusual power, and a search of his pockets revealed nothing of interest. But Vaalyun had never heard of such a power before, and clearly an assassin posessing such a unique skill would be able to command a high price. Whoever had hired him must be powerful, or at least wealthy. Vaalyun shook his head slightly, but gave no other sign of concern; he stood up, straightened his jacket, and resumed his walk to the Keep.

Above the Law(Vaalyun): Self-defence would be a sound argument anyway, but Vaalyun has better: his extra-legal status as a member of one of the Twelve Houses means he would have to do something very bad indeed before anyone would dare arrest him. He will have no trouble at all for this.

Let’s resolve the dinner offscreen. Vaalyun gets two things that he wanted: Michnas is introduced to regime officials and, in return, is Vaalyun’s ally for now and will aid him in return. And, he gets information (Carouse gives you one thing even on a miss) about the political situation in Newthrone that will help later, and which I will fill in later.

Rest(Vaalyun): All HP back for the next day
End of Session(party): Vaalyun used his House position to help himself again, +1 XP

Vaalyun: 6 failures, alignment goal; at 11XP.

That is a lot of failures in one session. Vaalyun himself got away relatively unscathed, but we have established that Newthrone is no longer safe for him and that the party will face resistance from another rakshasa once they return here.

III.22: Ice in the Jungle

Jungle, central Q’barra
Nymm 13, 997 YK

Mythic GME Chaos Rank: 6
Scene setup: d10=7 (unchanged)

Time for this story’s version of the chase across the planes of Rohan. Esthana wants to catch the Blackscales before they reach Haka’torvhak.

Tell them the requirements or consequences and ask: Push hard straight away, and you have a chance to catch them without risking travelling encounters; but you don’t get to camp and heal.

Esthana elects to camp; charging into a large camp of hostile lizardfolk is going to be bad, so she wants to have full health going in.

Esthana at first had hoped to catch up with Anaya, and her captors, on the first day, but soon realised that that would be impossible. The jungle was thick with foliage, and plate mail was not the best gear for travelling over uneven ground. And the Templar had still been stiff and sore from her tumble into the ravine. So she had made camp after a few hours, giving her body some time to recover.

Making camp was its own kind of trouble, however. Since she had lost her arm, she had always been with Anaya, but now Esthana was out in the jungle on her own. She soon realised that she could not remove her plate mail even to sleep, since she certainly could not don the mail again one-handed. Even lighting a fire was impossible; fortunately the jungle was fairly warm even at night, but she knew that it would be harder to march on cold food. It never crossed Esthana’s mind to turn back, however; she was determined to rescue her friends, and the loss of Anaya in particular weighed heavily on her mind.

Esthana is Sick: -1 to Con rolls. It’s not really sickness, just fatigue from sleeping in full plate. If this were a more realistic game, one might insist that she removed it and then make her carry it or something; but Dungeon World is made to be fantasy tropey, so let’s not sweat the details. Make Camp(Esthana): Heal; Esthana is at full health

Time to Undertake a Perilous Journey. As this is tracking rather than pathfinding, I’ll use the ranger Hunt and Track move with Nyseris’ animal companion.

Esthana cannot use Command for Nyseris’ animal companion to add their bonus to hers, but I’ll let Asmure roll alone using their cunning as the bonus; that is weaker than if Nyseris was here, or if Esthana was a ranger able to use their aid.

Hunt and Track(Asmure): 2D6(4 6) +2 = 12 Success!
Gain useful information about your quarry

Travel on the second day was a little faster, as Esthana’s wounds began to heal. She mostly travelled with Asmure, Nyseris’ snake companion, wrapped around one arm. That was how the ranger had usually carried the creature and, though it seemed uncertain at first, the snake soon understood that Esthana was offering to carry it and accepted her offer. The party of lizardfolk that they were tracking—and Esthana was sure from the tracks now that it was a lizardfolk warparty—was large enough that Esthana could usually follow the tracks unaided. At any point where the way was unclear, Esthana would let Asmure down and wait for the snake to set the direction. Then she would pick up the snake again a little further alone, once the trail was clear again.

Okay, now for the consequences of the earlier choice—does she run into anything?

Let’s say the two choices are find a shortcut, and get the drop on what’s ahead.

Esthana was starting to get more familiar with the jungle itself. There had been nothing like this back in Cyre; she had seen more than a few forests in ten years of army service, but never jungle. But she was beginning to get the feel of the terrain: recognising where the faster path would be down into a valley, where the best footing would be up an overgrown slope, and the patterns in the paths that the lizardfolk themselves used began to be familiar to her. Although the lizardfolk were at home here, they were also a large party with prisoners in tow, and Esthana felt that she was gaining on them.

And now for the huge, huge roll—does Esthana catch up before they reach their destination?

Defy Danger(CON)(Esthana): 2D6(2 4) +1 = 7 Partial success.
Worse outcome

I decided to roll for it on the Mythic event meaning table. 2d100=63, 21: ambush messages. An ambush works. Esthana has the drop on it, though, from her previous roll.

Shortly after setting out on the third day, the smell of woodsmoke on the air alerted Esthana to something ahead. Through the trees ahead the Templar could just see a clearing, and the trail that she followed led to it—surely this was the where the lizardfolk had camped overnight. There was no sign of activity—the lizardfolk must have already departed—but she could not be far behind them. Hope and fresh energy surged through Esthana, pushing back the weariness of two days of hard tracking through the forest; but she still pulled her cloak about her, and circled around to the north side of the camp, trying to observe the clearing while remaining hidden.

Discern Realities(Esthana): 2D6(1 1) +1 = 3 Failure!
Use a threat from an existing faction or type of creature: one of the lizardfolk is a sorceror.

After fifty yards or so, the ground dropped down to a small stream bed. Esthana was surprised to see a group of four black-scaled lizardfolk sitting down near the stream. Three of them were armed with spears, and all seemed to be waiting for something. Through the trees beyond the stream, she spied a lookout keeping watch towards the campsite. Are they waiting for me?

Esthana took a moment to think. If this was an ambush—whether for herself, or aimed at something else—then there were probably more lizardfolk that she could not see. And she was on her own; at least, she assumed Asmure would not help her in a fight. It would be hard to avoid the lizardfolk in their own terrain, and she did not have time to cover her tracks. No, she decided, she would have to deal with these lizardfolk here. At least her enemies had split their party, so there were fewer to fight at once.

Esthana can just deal damage to the first lizardfolk warrior. d10+d6 = 2! Not very helpful.

Then hack-and-slash as the lizardfolk defend themselves.

The lizardfolk jumped to their feet as the Templar charged down the slope. Esthana let out no cry and drew her sword at the last minute, its blade lighting up the shady clearing with silver fire as it left the scabbard. The first Blackscale warrior was on their feet as Esthana reached them, and her sword only slashed a cut across their chest as they jumped back. Esthana gave them no time to recover though, lunging while the lizardfolk was off-balance and driving her sword through the creature’s chest.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(3 2) +3 = 8 Partial success.
Deals d10+d6=10 damage; Deal damage: d8=4, 1 after armour

12 total damage is enough for two warriors.

The lizardfolk to her left used the opening to drive a spear-thrust at Esthana’s exposed side—once again the Templar rued the loss of her shield-arm—but her plate mail turned the spear tip away. Esthana turned to her right, keeping the spear point behind her body as she turned around, swinging her sword for an upward cut. The lizardfolk had over-extended and could not get their spear back in time; the Templar’s stroke cut deeply into their side, sending a second lizardfolk to the ground, bleeding.

Defy Danger(DEX)(Esthana): 2D6(1 6) +3+1 = 11 Success!

The two remaining lizardfolk backed up, one with a spear staying in front of the other as they backed up the slope. The one in the back shouted something in Draconic, and then extended the staff in their hands to point at Esthana. Spellcaster she thought, rolling to her right as a bolt of ice flew from the staff, streaking over her. Back on her feet, she saw two more lizardfolk out of the corner of her eye, coming up the stream from closer to the camp, as she rushed up the slope to the sorceror.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(1 3) +3+1 = 8 Partial success.
Let’s say she hits the one in front, not the sorceror; the monster attack will be the sorceror casting something; I’m using the Orc Shaman from the Codex for the sorceror (though he’s really a lizardfolk, and I’m not giving him 14HP, he can have 6 like the others), so Monster move(Change the Environment). And those next two lizardfolk are lining up bow shots. But she deals d10+d6=11 damage

3 lizardfolk down; Esthana is at 25/26HP. The fighter is doing what they do best.

The other lizardfolk barred her way though, jabbing with their spear. Esthana continued her rush, parrying the spear aside, crashing into the black-scaled creature and knocking them to the ground. A quick downstroke with her sword finished the creature off. But, as she looked up, suddenly the air around her turned bitterly cold; ice and snow suddenly filled the air and covered the ground. Esthana could no longer see the sorceror—but they had to be nearby.

Esthana rushed to the spot where she had last seen the sorceror, at the top of the slope; she ignored the sudden sleet, holding in her mind the image of the jungle as it had been only moment before. She passed a tree and glimpsed the sorceror running up the slope. Moving quickly despite her heavy armour, Esthana pursued, thick sleet streaking her breastplate as she charged forward. She reached the sorceror and took a swing as him, but her sword connected with a tree—barely visible in the unnatural storm—instead.

Monster move(Twist the Elements); Deal damage: d8+3 = 9 ignoring armour. Esthana is at 16/26 HP. And another two lizardfolk jumps in to defend the sorceror: I was imagining around ten in total, and the spellcaster did call for help.

Hack and Slash(Esthana): 2D6(4 1) +3 = 8 Partial success.
Deals d10+d6=10 damage, Deal damage: d8 = 8 damage, 5 after armour.

Esthana is at 11/26HP. This is looking pretty bad: the sorceror has attacks that ignore her plate mail, and the lizardfolk are all individually fairly tough. Of course, it should be dangerous, since this ambush was intended to kill her; a ”balanced” encounter based on the monster tags would be 3-4 lizardfolk. There’s a good chance she dies or is captured trying to do this.

Otherwise, there’s two more lizardfolk coming up behind her, and maybe two more scouts that haven’t got back to the fight yet (making my original 10). Those latter ones depend on whether the GM gets a move to introduce them.

The sorceror turned, yelling something in Draconic, and pointed their staff at Esthana. She felt a sudden freezing chill in her chest, as if a spike of ice had been driven in to her, winding her and sapping her strength. As she reeled from the blow, the forms of two more lizardfolk loomed up to her through the shroud of sleet. The Templar steeled herself, parrying aside spearpoints in their initial rush; she quickly dispatched one of the lizardfolk warriors, but not before the other had managed to drive their spear into the joint in her plate mail over her hip; it was sharply painful, and she could feel blood seeping into her gambeson.

There were 4 lizardfolk total over the last two hack-and-slashes, so 24HP total. Esthana dealt 25 damage total, so they are all dead. Esthana is at 9/26HP.

Esthana’s combat experience was all that was keeping her alive at this point. Despite the pain and the sleet swirling around her, she was still aware that there were two other lizardfolk behind her; unable to see her through the sleet, they would have slung their bows and be approaching under its cover. She drove the remaining lizardfolk in front of her back a little, putting herself where her left side was covered by a tree, so the ones behind must approach on her right. When she saw the lizardfolk’s eyes flicker briefly to something behind her, she moved: with one quick slash to knock aside the spear of the one in front, she turned and charged the two approaching from behind, catching them completely by surprise. In two quick strokes she felled both of them. The one that she had been fighting managed one more jab into her back, drawing more blood, before she turned and cut them down also.

Seven lizardfolk down, sorceror still around.

What here is hidden?

Just as she was catching her breath, Esthana felt the lingering cold in her chest suddenly intensify, speading throughout her body. The sleet storm still raging around her, the Templar pressed forward despite the icy chill running through her veins—both were surely conjurations of the sorceror, lurking out of sight. The sorceror was probably immune to his own conjuration and would hide inside it, she suspected, as cover; Esthana turned towards where the storm seemed thickest, with her sword, still ablaze with the light of the Flame, lighting the way.

Moving between two trees, she found the sorceror hiding behind one of them, looking in another direction. With a quick step, Esthana was beside them and had her sword to the lizardfolk’s throat.

Parley(Esthana): 2D6(2 3) -1 = 4 Failure!

Okay, let’s make a random GM move here. Maybe the creature persuades Esthana that her companions are already dead; maybe Anaya is already beyond her reach; maybe the creature attacks; introduce a new element to the fight; off-screen move. I rolled a 3.

“Where is the Templar?” Esthana shouted at the Blackscale, pushing them against a tree.

The sorceror said nothing, but a moment later Esthana felt the cold around her intensify. The blood in her veins seemed to freeze, and it was hard to move. But, with the last of her strength, she pushed on her blade, cutting into the lizardfolk’s throat as she pinned them to the tree. Her vision began to blur, and she could no longer feel the pressure of the blade in her hands. Then, suddenly, the cold stopped; her vision returned, and Esthana felt her muscles again, as if freed from the icy grasp. The sleet was gone, and in front of her was the body of the lizardfolk sorceror, their blood covering the front of the Templar’s plate.

Deal damage: d8+3 = 7 damage. Esthana is at 2/26HP. Very close...

Esthana deals d10+d6=12 damage.

Esthana let the body fall to one side, and then she slumped at the foot of the tree. With the spell ended, the heat of the jungle quickly reasserted itself, and she was soon soaked as the buildup of frost under her armour quickly melted in the morning’s warmth. After a few minutes resting, she sheathed her sword, and then set about bandaging her many wounds. As she went through the familiar routine of tending her wounds, Esthana thought how close she had come to catching the main group of Blackscales, and wondered how long it would be before she would be in striking range again.

End of Session(party): Interpreting it liberally, I’ll say Esthana meets her alignment goal of defending those weaker than herself (her allies are captured so are helpless right now, and she’s fighting to help them): +1 XP

XP:
Anaya: 0 failures; at 9XP.
Esthana: 3 failures, alignment goal; at 7XP.
Nyseris: 0 failures; at 9XP.
Vaalyun: 0 failures; at 4XP.

It’s hard for one character on their own to do well against tough fights, because you can’t be good at everything (for instance, Esthana had to make her own Parley, with -1 Cha modifier, at the end there). But equally Esthana did not have to save weaker characters during this session (which is usually what gets her in trouble in fights). Still, it was pretty close in the end; I gave lots of options on that final roll since I knew that dealing damage could kill her. I would probably have had her captured instead of killed had she got a partial success on her Last Breath.

Esthana is nearly back to square one, though: injured, she cannot pursue immediately, and will have to make another roll to catch the Blackscales again. She will only get one more chance before they reach their destination.

Jungle north-east of Newthrone, Q’barra
Nymm 11, 997 YK

The murmur of flowing water and the smell of the jungle came back first. The air around was warm and humid, but Esthana was cooler than she had been earlier. She became aware of the daylight and the sounds of birds calling in the jungle canopy. It still took Esthana some seconds to realize her own position, sprawled on the ground.

She opened her eyes, and saw the walls of the ravine rising on both sides above her, trees and other foilage growing out from its sides; the remains of the rope bridge still hung, lopsided, over above her, a ragged line cutting across the blue sky above. Esthana’s head had come to rest against a tree trunk, and pain in the side of her head where she had struck it suddenly came into focus.

The ogre tossed me into the ravine. What happened to the others? Esthana put her hand to her head, but then took it away, grasping at the tree to help her to rise. Clearly time had passed, though she could not see the sun down here to tell how much; but she could hear no sounds of battle above now.

Defy Danger(STR)(Esthana): 2D6(6 3) +1 = 10 Success!
Armoured(Esthana): Able to move unhindered, even in plate mail

If she had failed a roll, I might have temporarily taken the sword away (lizardfolk could have taken it); but she did not. Her sword is also unblemished, as she chose that tag for her Signature Weapon.

First she had to get out of the ravine. The sides were very steep at the bridge itself, but less so to the east of the bridge—though still difficult enough for a one-armed fighter wearing plate mail. Esthana had spent years in Cyre’s army, though, usually wearing heavy chain and a breastplate and often marching in difficult conditions during the Last War; she could manage as well in armour as most people would without.

Without really thinking about it, she had climbed the south side of the ravine. On reaching the top, she found the bodies of many of the Tharashk contingent lying here: several humans and half-orcs, and of course the ogre; the air was thick with the smell of blood and the buzzing of flies. Her sword was still stuck through the creature’s chest, and a cloud of flies flew off as she rolled the large creature onto its back and retrieved the sword. Silver flames ran down the blade as she withdrew the sword; despite the hours stuck in the creature, it came away with no bloodstain, and she could sheathe it again immediately.

As the pain in her head eased, Esthana began to take in the situation a little better. There was only one lizardfolk body south of the bridge, and no sign of the survivors. Anaya and Nyseris would not have abandoned me—so where are they? Anaya had gone to the north bank, and Nyseris might have done the same; looking that way, Esthana saw the collapsed bridge deck, planks hanging vertically, with one of the supports on the far side smashed. Fear rose up in her, and Esthana was further alarmed to see scorched trees on that side of the ravine; the fight on that side must have gone badly.

The bridge was a mess, so Esthana made her way down into the ravine again, hurried along by grim thoughts. In her army days, it had happened once or twice that she had been send to investigate a missing patrol and found them dead; finding comrades dead was something that ten years of war service had not made any easier. Her journey was not cheered when she found a lizardfolk dead at the bottom of the ravine, under the bridge—with some trepidation she checked them, and was relieved that it was not Nyseris.

At this point, I was going to make a Defy roll for Anaya or Nyseris to see if they were able to leave some sign for Esthana. Then it occurred to me that...

Is Asumre still here? Likely (Fictional positioning: Nyseris described putting their animal companion on the ground).
Fate d100(79)=Yes

It will be bending the rules a bit to let Esthana work with the animal companion, but I like the idea. It neatly solves the problem that the only tracker in the party was captured, making it hard to track the prisoners.

I’ll give Esthana a little more help here and let her use her Seeing Red to examine the aftermath of a combat. It’s some compensation for forgetting to use it in the last fight.

Discern Realities(Esthana): 2D6(1 5) +1+1 = 8 Partial success.
What happened here recently?

It took some time to find a way up, but after thirty minutes or so she was on the north side, surveying the remains of the battle there. From the bodies here, it was apparent that the fight on this side had gone less well, and it was the bodies that she checked first: to Esthana’s great relief, Anaya was not amongst the humans here, and Nyseris was not recognisable amongst the lizardfolk—although several were burned and at least one lizardfolk was burned beyond recognition. Esthana believed that her friends were not amongst the dead, though, and offered up a prayer to the Flame for their deliverance.

It was apparent that a spellcaster, one of the Tharashk party, had made a stand here. There was another ogre here—killed by Anaya’s sword, Esthana thought—and some orcs and humans run through by lizardfolk spears. Esthana checked the bodies of the orcs and humans, but she could not tell if any was the spellcaster. A cleric or channeller might carry a holy symbol or focus for their magic—or perhaps it was just a regular mercenary with a wand. Either way, if one of these had carried it, it had been taken from them. And there were tracks of many lizardfolk around: it could be the Cold Dragon tribe, but there were more tracks here than just the few lizardfolk that had been on the north side of the bridge; perhaps there had been another group here, but Esthana was no tracker and could not tell for sure.

The lizardfolk did search these, but I’ll give Esthana one treasure roll for stuff that they missed—the lizardfolk left quickly, whereas Esthana has time. The rakshasa’s stuff is all taken, of course.

d6=6 Useful information (clue, notes etc). Okay then, maybe something of the Rakshasa’s stuff is still here; it has to be something concrete and useful as well.

Fate d100(70)=No

Something simpler then. The rakshasa’s bosses are now in play, in some fashion which I’ll figure out another time.

She had almost given up searching, when a red cloak caught the Templar’s attention. It seemed discarded, as it was not fixed to a body, and certainly would not belong to her party. The cloak bore some strange symbols that Esthana did not recognise; in the inside pocket was a leather-bound journal, with a symbol of a tower in flames on the front cover. The book was written in a language that she did not understand or even recognise; it seemed out of place, even for a group of mercenaries including orcs and ogres. Perhaps Vaalyun can make something of this.

As she put the book away, her eye was drawn to a small snake, perhaps two feet long, moving across the charred ground. The jungle was full of wildlife and so it would hardly be noteworthy, except that the snake was coming straight towards her. As it drew close though, Esthana realized that the snake was familiar—it was Nyseris’ animal companion, Asmure. It stopped in front of her, seeming to wait for the Templar to do something.

Anaya and Nyseris were not here, and would not have left voluntarily without her; they were prisoners, Esthana supposed. She was no tracker and did not know the jungle, so her only other alternative was to try to return to the Cold Dragon village or to Newthrone.

She tightened the straps of her pack, then turned back to the snake. “Can you lead me to Nyseris?” The creature surely did not understand Common, perhaps any language, but hopefully it wanted to return to the ranger.

Asmure turned away, slithering down a tree root, heading east. I guess that’s good enough for me, thought Esthana, and followed the creature deeper into the jungle.

Vaalyun stepped into the common room at the Dragon’s Hoard and glanced around, looking for new arrivals. Vaalyun had not come to talk to d’Ghallanda, but it would not do to snub a business associate. He approached the bar, walking as casually as he could despite the pain in his ankle. Despite two days of rest, the injury—sustained in his fall in flight from the Tharashk guildhouse—was still troubling him, but he dared not reveal the injury to his bodyguards. The two Tharashk guards were with him, of course, as they were paid to shadow him throughout the day; Vaalyun regretted hiring them, as they limited what he could do during the day, but it could not be helped now.

“How is your new chapterhouse doing?” d’Ghallanda asked when Vaalyun approached.

“Fine, thank you. The building is well suited to our purposes,” Vaalyun said.

“I am glad to hear it. The more the Houses prosper here, the more I do.” d’Ghallanda was in a good mood, and Vaalyun could guess why: the new arrival signalled more work for the Ghallanda enclave here.

“Are those the newcomers?” he asked, looking over his shoulder at a group of half-elves seated by the window.

“Yes indeed. The airship arrived only a few hours ago.”

Vaalyun had heard about the airship by a report from Ievos already, and he already knew that he had not seen these half-elves here before, so his questions were more for politeness than necessity. “I will take the opportunity to introduce myself, then,” he said, ending with a bow to Bertram.

Spend hold(Vaalyun): Who is really in control here? (context: which of the new arrivals is the one in charge)

Since Vaalyun had a success, and the Dragonmarked houses cooperate to an extent, let’s say he actually knows the Lyrander heir here.

There were three half-elves at the table, all finely dressed with well-tailored clothes and sky-blue ermine-trimmed cloaks. Their cloak clasps bore the imprint of a kraken, the symbol of House Lyrander—the House that operated Khorvaire’s airships. Vaalyun easily identified the leader of the group, a male half-elf who was the oldest of the group; indeed, he recognised him, having met him in Thaliost perhaps ten years ago.

“Greetings, Michnas d’Lyrander. Would I be intruding if I joined you?” Vaalyun bowed formally.

Michnas bowed his head in return, and gestured to an empty seat. “It is good to see you again, Vaalyun d’Phiarlan, in this distant corner of the world.”

Michnas was around sixty years old, with a scar under his left eye that he must have got a long time ago. His doublet, dark blue and embroidered with silver thread, was of a quality that marked him as a person of some wealth. His tone was a little formal, and his expression was guarded—although Vaalyun, ever diplomatic in his dealings with others, was used to that sort of reception.

What does Vaalyun know of this Captain Michnas?

Vague information

Vaalyun tried to recall what he had heard of this Michnas. He was a captain of some repute; Lyrander operated regular airship services between many of Khorvaire’s cities, but Michnas was surely doing something more important than ferrying nobles between cities once a week. There were rumours that some Lyrander captains had been hired out as privateers during the Last War, but Vaalyun had no way of knowing if Michnas was one such.

“It is good to see you also. We are far from where we last met. Yet this country is a rising force, and draws the interest of many Houses it seems.” As usual, Vaalyun fell easily into conversation about business.

You get it, and don’t have to give very much in return.

“I gather that Tharashk and Ghallanda have been here for some time, but your own presence I did not know of until we arrived.”

“Yes; Ghallanda has strong roots in the halfling enclave here, and Tharashk is a growing presence here thanks to the dragonshard trade.”

“Maugron, Lanverel—leave us a moment.” Michnas dismissed his two associates, and they reluctantly picked up their beers and moved to another table nearby. Vaalyun gladly reciprocated, gesturing to his orc and half-orc bodyguards to stand away from them.

“How much do you know of this dragonshard trade? Is the jungle as lucrative as Tharashk claims?” Michnas was very much in earnest now. Vaalyun kept the conversation casual, as if merely sharing professional gossip—though in reality he was delighted at the turn of conversation.

“Yes, Tharashk appears to be able to locate substantial deposits of Eberron dragonshards here. Their trade is thriving I believe; substantial expeditions are organised often, I hear.”

“So Bertram d’Ghallanda said. Is the King complaisant with this trade? Tharashk has asked our assistance with exploring more distant deposits, but we would like to understand the position of the government here before involving ourselves too deeply.”

This made sense to Vaalyun. Tharashk’s expeditions were mostly on foot through the jungle so far, but the trade was so profitable that it made sense to use airships to speed up the work in more distance locations. And using airships meant bringing House Lyrander into the deal.

“As far as I know, the government is happy to see Tharashk bringing more trade to the town. But I have not met the King himself, only the Marshal.”

Michnas nodded, but Vaalyun saw an opportunity here. Clearly Michnas was concerned about assisting House Tharashk while having only their word that the government approved—or at least accepted—the dragonshard trade.

“I understand the importance of knowing that the nobles of any place are supportive of ones’ trade—hence my approach to the Marshal when I arrived. And I have made some connections at court already in my short time here. Perhaps I could be of use in arranging a meeting for you with the appropriate official?”

Vaalyun is offering to arrange a meeting, and in exchange wants to be in the confidence of Michnas. I think the limitation of his partial success here is that he doesn’t get to be at the meeting (not openly at least: he might have to make rolls to spy on it, if he wants that).

Michnas relaxed a little. “We understand each other. I would be glad if you can arrange such a meeting.”

Defy Danger(CON)(Nyseris): 2D6(6 6) +1 = 13 Success!
Badly injured, at 1HP, hands bound—but you stay on your feet through a nine-hour forced march.

The tent flap was held aside, and Anaya was thrust inside at spearpoint. Her hands were bound, but the Blackscales had left her with her chainmail and tabard, the silver flame symbol embroidered on the front still visible though the grime and bloodstains.

The Blackscale raiding party had marched all afternoon until well after dusk before making camp. There were around twenty lizardfolk in the group, including their leader and a shaman; since they had marched so late, Anaya supposed that they had travelled far and had far to go to their destination. Anaya’s attention on the march had been divided between the Blackscales and Nyseris, who was in bad shape after the fight; she had feared that the ranger would succumb to their many wounds, but they had been able to match the pace of their captors through the long march without difficulty.

Outside the camp had been lit by a large campfire, but inside the light was an eerie purple coming from an everbright lantern. The chieftain stood waiting for Anaya; they said something in Draconic to the guards, who pushed Anaya to the centre of the tent and then stood to the sides, still with spears ready. The lizardfolk could not stop her drawing on the power of the Flame—but they could kill her if she tried it.

“I am Neeate, of the Acid S–scar tribe,” said the chieftain. Neeate was tall even for a lizardfolk, nearly seven foot, and their black scales glinted in the purple light.

“Lady Anaya, Templar of the Silver Flame.” Anaya was tired and wished she could sit, but did not wish to show weakness in front of her captors before she knew what they intended.

“We have been watching you for some weeks now.”

Anaya did not know whether to believe that. “What business do you have with the Church?”

“What brings you to Q’barra?”

“Why have you taken us captive?”

Neeate said something to one of the guards, who stepped up to Anaya and struck her in the back with the butt of their spear. Anaya fell to her knees.

“I must bring you alive to Rhashaak, but they said nothing about your condition. Make this difficult if you must, but we will have answers–s from you.”

Anaya was tired, and still injured from the fight with the Tharashk ambushers; she needed time to rest and renew her powers. She nodded reluctantly. “I seek out cultists of the Dragon Below.”

“And you found a rakshasa. Do you know what it was doing in Q’barra?”

Investigate(Anaya): 2D6(6 2) +1 = 9 Partial success.
Vague information

“No.” Anaya had been thinking about that, too, during today’s march. The rakshasa were agents and commanders amongst the demons, but why was it working with House Tharashk?

“It was carrying this—do you recognise it?” Neeate took something from their pack and handed it to Anaya; it was a seal, a noble’s stamp for sealing documents with their heraldic symbol.

What here is useful or valuable to me? What here is not what it appears to be?

Three lizards and a dragon... Anaya realized that she knew the sigil. “It is Count Zuokas’ seal.”

“A human noble?” Neeate was watching her closely.

“Yes.” Anaya was the younger daughter of a noble herself, and knew that such a seal would only be in the hands of a trusted member of the household—like their steward. Elisea was the rakshasa, disguised?

“What do you know of this noble?” asked Neeate.

“They were the organizer of a group of demon cultists.” Anaya knew now that that was not strictly true—the rakshasa must have been the real power behind the cult—but she hoped it was close enough to the truth to fool her captor.

“Interesting; we have encountered humans bearing this s–sigil before. Humans are troublesome upstarts; they have no business interfering in the affairs of the lizardfolk. The Dragon Below is ours. Where is this Count?”

An attack on Newthrone or its environs by the lizardfolk could start a war. “He is already dead; we killed him and his cultists.”

Offer Aid from an Enemy, or Opposition from an Ally: reversed in this case: the player characters helped enemy NPCs by killing off a rival faction.

“Then it appears that you have already been of service to us. You have our thanks, Templar. I hope that you will be able to render us an even greater service soon.”

“What do you want from us?”

GM move(soft): Show signs of an approaching threat: the GM makes a soft move ahead of the hard move Learn forbidden knowledge (one of the Blackscale’s front moves, as Arcane Enemies); showing the player characters the coming Grim Portent.

“We need someone to channel the Silver Flame. We need you to free Rhashaak.”

Anaya’s eyes widened in horror. “I do not have that power,” she said in alarm, as much to herself as to Neeate. The creatures bound by the Flame were the demons of greatest evil and danger to the world, as she had been taught and had preached as a cleric for years; the idea that her power could be used to release such an evil into the world was appalling. “I will not aid you!”

Neeate bared their teeth in a threatening smile. “We will see.”

End of Session(party): Vaalyun used his House’s reputation again, albeit a little indirectly; and I think introducing House Lyrander is enough to say that we learned something new about the world.
